Durgavtara Workshop: A Navratri Special Workshop was hosted by Rajasthan Studio where two traditional artforms Tholu Bommalata and Madhubani were blended to create traditional adornments of the Durgavtara. To experience a spiritual aura around the Navratri festivities, Rajasthan Studio curated a Durgavtara Workshop and invited Rashmi Singh. A graduate from NID, who is closely working with craft and sustainability, she loves to explore crafts as a medium to engage people and their heritage.
The Durgavtara Workshop Began
As red was the colour of the day, all the 40 participants wore traditional red outfits and gathered their art supplies. Rashmi began the experience by explaining about combining two traditional artforms, Tholu Bommalata and Madhubani. She briefly explained the art of narrating stories through Tholu Bommalata, a heritage craft from over 2000 years ago. First, she made the wireframe or the outline of the sketch using a pencil. Rashmi then added detailing to the traditional ornaments of Devi Durga by using typical madhubani and tholu motifs.
The attendees carefully observed and drew along with Rashmi. Meanwhile, Rashmi also shared some very useful tips to draw the face and lips proportionality. Rashmi then filled the outline of the goddess with colours. She mainly used red, and then highlighted using a golden colour, making the painting look more lively.
The curious attendees asked various questions about the colour medium and the art form Thollu Bommalata. Rashmi answered them very promptly. She said,
Focusing on the process and coming up with our unique version of art is the most important.
Towards The End Of The Workshop
By the end of the workshop, all the attendees had successfully created beautiful versions of Durgavtara. The workshop was very enlightening as well as fun for all the attendees.
The attendees were from different parts of the country and belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rajasthan studio as always was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
